MAP Assessments

The MAP assessment tool is similar to STAR testing that Van Buren students have completed for many years.  STAR testing was linked to an AR level and was largely based on low-level, recall thinking skills.  In contrast, the MAP assessment has a richer research base, is aligned to the Common Core (National Standards), and requires higher-level thinking skills. Results are measured in RIT scores and LEXILE levels.  The district has chosen to invest in MAP because it provides a more reliable measure of a student's abilities in the content ares of Math, Reading, and Language Arts.

Van Buren students in 3rd -11th grade began taking MAP assessments during the 2010-2011 school year in the areas of Reading and Math. During the 2011-2012 school year Lanugage Arts testing was added during our Spring test period. Looking ahead to 2012-2013 the district plans to also deliver the Primary MAP to K-2 students.
